The icon is of high antiquarian artistic value. It capable become the pearl of the collection of the highest rank.
Saint Euegene is well equipped with a shield, sword, and spear. The icon painter masterfully ornamented even weapons. Saint is in the ideal holy image. Elegance, slimness, and sophistication, ancient Russian painting tradition, which Mstera has preserved precisely.
This icon is not simple, though laconic in its canon. This is a classic Mstera high icon painting school. This is for the first time when we met the icon of Saint Eugene the Warrior, that is, the icon is rare and quite delicious. Icon-painting workshops have grown from small family workshops to fairly large ones up to 30 hired icon painters in the workshops of Guryanov and the Chirikov brothers. This is this style, which cannot be confused. According to their culture, the Old Believers considered the iconography of ancient Novgorod and Moscow of the 16th century to be exemplary paintings. At the same time, they worked for the Old Believers both in modern and in the new church academic style. The Msterians never departed from the ancient traditions until the 1666 schism.
This style is reflected here in the combination of the amazing colour of the fields, such as a "sunny" tempera hue combined with a sky background in the centrepiece. This is Mstera. There is also a moderate use of gold leaf, a strong strict pattern, and a slender, slightly elongated figure of Saint Eugene - which is also Mstera's "calling card". The face is painted in a lot of melts. We removed only the top outer layer of protective varnish of slightly darkened drying oil in order to expose the light and colours of the icon. It’s just that the native drying oil darkened slightly and the icon did not need to be fully opened, only cleaned. Half of the drying oil layer was removed while preserving the original varnish and preservation.
