Description: This is the highest class icon of the Moscow School of Iconography. In the 17th century, this school was the strongest school in Russia, which gave to the world such masterpieces as this icon of Alexy the Man of God.
This saint ascetic and miracle worker who lived in the 5th century, is very popular in Christianity and is revered both in the Orthodox and the Catholic Church. He is glorified in the face of the Rev. The story of St. Alexius in the Orthodox East was widely disseminated. The first mention of Alexia, who lived by alms and who later came from a noble Roman family, dates back to the 5th century in Syrian sources. In the 9th century, the veneration of Alexy as a great ascetic and miracle worker spreads throughout the Byzantine Empire and appears in the Roman clergy.
On the day of the death of St. Alexis, the Pope of Rome served in the cathedral church and during the service a wonderful Voice came from the altar: "Come to Me, all who are laboring and burdened, and Az will reassure You"
His relics are in a coffin, which is decorated with gold and precious stones. It is located under the main altar of the Basilica of Boniface and Alexius on the Aventine hill in Rome.
Russian iconography goes back to the Byzantine: face of Alexy the Man of God resembles the appearance of John the Baptist. Usually the Saint is portrayed as a beggar, often in full growth, with arms crossed on his chest or with a charter in his hand, as it is on this icon, where Alexy is depicted as the saint who is praying for Great Rome. The importance of the saint in this icon shows his size relative to the others.
The standard work of the Moscow icon painting school, piece of art .
The masterful work of a talented icon painter. Delicate miniature painting is present here even in the smallest details. For example, the throne where Christ sits surrounded by Angels in the upper left corner of the icon is masterfully decorated with the finest pattern with blackening on gold leaf. Architecture clearly painted in the opposite perspective, rich and noble color palette, harmonious a composition with a monumental, grandiose image of St. Alexy near the city. His figure is impeccably the dominant in this icon. His tunic is all decorated with sparkling melted polished gold. Dark olive background of the icon with the ark- is the classic sign of high Moscow icon painting school.
The inscription on the icon is not made in the center of the icon, but to the right directly above the saint. This is not entirely canonical, but once again emphasizes the importance of the saint.
This icon is of high antique and historical significance.
