The sky-blue background of the icon is decorated very interestingly using touches of melted gold. A distinctive feature and a striking attribution is the solution of the icon’s soil with the style of depicting hills with flowers characteristic of the Moscow school. Please pay attention to the exquisite miniature architecture of the monastery. The temple bulbs are made of gold leaf with blackening. The left corner of the icon deserves attention - how skillfully and subtly the trees with foliage are painted!
The saint is depicted against the background of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra monastery he founded.
Separately, I would like to draw attention to the decoration of the saint’s clothes - the trimmings of the clothes are made with melted gold, not only gold in color, but also white!
The face of the saint is painted with amazing mastery in many layers of tempera. In the right corner of the icon there is an image of Jesus Christ blessing Sergius. His figure is also distinguished by its virtuosity of execution. The sophistication of miniature painting, which also uses more than one color of gold, is stunning.
The husk (luzga) of the ark is made of gold leaf with polishing.
Overall, the icon really amazes with its craftsmanship. We can recall only a few icons of this level in our entire memory of the gallery's work. One cannot but rejoice at the perfect preservation of this icon. The coating varnish-drying oil did not darken at all, which indicates a special recipe for making drying oil by the best Moscow craftsmen. The master also carefully approached the selection of the board for this icon - it is earlier than the icon itself.
