Description: This image of the Mother of God is a very rare and unusual icon. It depicts the Mother of God in the dress of the abbess , standing in the sky above the monastery . The image of the Mother of God as the prioress is very rare in the iconography. It is known only one such type iconography : " The Abbess Mountain Athos ," which depicts the Mother of God standing on the Holy Mountain.
The images are very similar. But at the bottom of this icon there is Novo-Tikhvin monastery instead of the Mount Athos. Hence the name. This icon called - Pilgrimage icon. Such icons were made for the people who were visiting this northern monastery and they were written by the icon painters - monks from this monastery.
Usually in any large monastery there was a similar tradition of the pilgrimage icon, where were depicted saints associated with this monastery .
