St. Mary of Egypt and the Guardian Angel with icon - Protection of the Mother of God.
18th century. 1700-1750. Russia.
Size: 28,5 x 26,0 x 2,5 cm.
Technique & Material: One piece board with deep ark, gesso, egg tempera, silver on the crowns, drying oil.
Description: Gentle colors with predominance of ocher. Angel clothes with azure. Extremely costly pigment for its time. Its use indicates the high status of the painter.
In the upper part of the icon - the icon of the Protection of the Mother of God. Apparently this image was especially honored by the customer or by whom this was intended as a gift icon.
The history of the subject : Protection of the Blessed Mother of God - the great Orthodox holiday in memory of the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God in the Blachernae church in 910, during the siege of Constantinople. Protection of the Blessed Mother of God - a sign covering, strengthen, and saving us by God's grace. The icon depicts the procession in heaven in the clouds, to the Savior. The procession is headed by Mother of God who is holding in her arms a little pall (cover), and behind her - hosts of saints. The icon symbolizes prayer of the whole Heaven Church for the human race. On the day of the Protection of Mother of God Orthodox people in Russia were going to the temple with the all members of their family in prayer to ask for mercy and intercession of Mother of God.
