Description: The Stavrotek Icon - so called a similar type of icons with mortise copper cast plastic.
This icon is probably unique in its plot and composition. In any case, we never met a similar iconography with large round medallions with the Evangelists inside. Background of the icon - City of Jerusalem. The composition of the plot of the Crucifixion is so extremely detailed that practically there is no empty space. Such nuance, like flowers, also tell us about the Old Believer origin of the icon.
The good Icon painters of the old faith not only performed the original canon, but also loved the “experiments” with the most detailed “narrative” disclosure of the composition of the icon within the canon. Of course, only the experienced icon painter “isographic” could handle such work.
This icon is the answer to all critics, who is calling the icon painting as copy art, not art. In this icon we can see a real artist who proved himself as an artist/creator, within the framework of the canon. This is much more complicated than just religious painting, where you can draw anything to anyone.
Among the Christians of the old faith, the icon painter was not only a good artist, but also a very worthy person.
Perfect state of preservaton.
Provenance: This icon was purchased in Ukraine from a private collection.
