Technique & Material: Arch-shaped figured board, gesso ground, tempera, drying oil. High academic school of painting of neo-Byzantine direction. The borders are decorated by a complex ornament in a style of modern, using embossing and “cold” enamel.
Description: The icon came out of an elite capital environment; its author was one of the painters of St. Petersburg academy of arts; he created this monument of art for individual order. The icon is made at the top artistic level and represents a very uncommon branch of Russian icon-painting, known as neo-Byzantine.
It appeared in St. Petersburg in the end of 19th – beginning of the 20th century, on the base of St. Petersburg academy of arts, due to the creative input of many prominent and famous Russian painters, like Vasnetsov, Nesterov, Vrubel, who turned to icon-painting at some point of their lives. Vasnetsov’s work in this area was especially intensive. Ideal state of preservation A very rare icon having high collection, antique and museum significance.
