Description: Blessed Simon (Simon of Jurijev) - Orthodox saint , whacky. Simon was the son of the villagers who lived near the town Yurievets. After retiring from the parental home he secretly settled in the woods and walked barefoot in the winter in light clothing. He was wandering around the city, subjected to ridicule and beatings. Saint Simon meekly endured all the insults and did not pay back evil for evil , but prayed for offenders. He often walked to the home residents and assisted them in the performance of the most difficult works , but did not take any money. His food was limited to the most modest and meager. Despite the constant labors, the part of the day and night he devoted to prayer and his favorite pastime was to pray on the steps of different churches. He died in 1584. In 1635 the abbot Dionysius has created a description of the Saint Simon life and his miracles. His all-Russian reverence began from this year and appear first icons of Saint Simon.
There is a curious entry in the annals, which is saying about a fire in Kostroma. Commander of an army asked Simon : " Simpleton , save the city! " In response, he hit with full force in the face of the commander. The act was a strange and daring, but the fire immediately ceased. Also locals saw Saint Simon walking on the Volga River.
Simpleton (from Old Slavic ourod, yurod - "stupid, crazy") - a deliberate effort to seem stupid, insane. In Orthodoxy simpletons - wandering friars and religious zealots. Purposes of their alleged insanity (foolishness for Christ's sake) declared conviction external worldly values, hiding their own virtues and incurring the reproaches and insults.
The icon is in perfect state of preservation. It was not cleared from the original varnish.
