Technique & Material: Solid board, tempera, leaf and melted gold, drying oil. The halo is made of leaf gold and polished with agate stone. The inscriptions are masterfully made with melted gold.

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is perhaps the most famous and revered Christian saint. He went down in history as a great miracle worker and defender of the faith.

The image of Nicholas the Wonderworker is probably familiar to everyone. Usually we are used to seeing Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker on icons as a kind, wise old man.

But on this icon Nicholas "Otvratnuty" (from Church Slavonic - turned away), the face of the saint here is different. It is distinguished by a number of features: the head is slightly turned to the right, the eyes are turned away. Saint seems to be turning away from the one praying, full of energy. He is emphatically majestic and above the world. This remarkable iconography appears in Russia from the 15-16th century, where special attention began to be paid to the face of the saint, spiritual, energetic and somewhat stern face.

So the entire surface of the pictorial field is occupied almost only by the face of the saint. Of the vestments, only the collar of the omophorion is visible. Its colorful palette of three colors is magnificent: gold leaf, red cinnabar and emerald green. In this icon, all the colors are pure and clear. Remarkable harmony.

The face of the saint is superbly executed in the pure "school", refined style of the Moscow school. The background is pure, warm ocher.

This remarkable iconography is one of the unstudied types and its origin is unknown.

In the 18-19th centuries, this icon was depicted by Old Believer masters, thanks to whom it has reached our days.
