Description:  For the development of Kostroma art school the most was the activity of the Godunov boyars in the Ipatiev Monastery, founded by their ancestor. In the 16th century they built a monastery in stone. After that the boyars Godunovs organized their own icon-painting workshops here, which marked the beginning of the formation of the artistic traditions of Kostroma, elevating its art. It was the Kostroma art school that became the backbone of the Armory School. Top icon painting level after the Rublev era.

In subsequent years, the Ipatiev Monastery and Kostroma enjoyed special patronage of the Romanovs in connection with the blessing here of the reign of Mikhail Fedorovich.

In the 17th century, Kostroma quickly settled down. In 1628, the Scribe Book names eleven icon painters who lived here. Shunga became a special centre of icon painting. This the village that is located 5 km from Kostroma along the old road to Yaroslavl, the patrimony of the Chudov Monastery. The Kostroma school of wall painting produced a number of great muralists and decorators.

The 17th century is the time when this icon was painted. This is the apotheosis of the development of the Kostroma school. The most significant things were created during this period.

This John the Voinstvennik (warrior) is the standard of the highest-level school of the 17th century. The Kostroma style is distinguished by solemnity, festive color. It is characterized by extraordinary grace, drawing to the smallest detail, jewellery precision. The Kostroma icon evokes a sense of celebration. Lush decorativeness, however, was not an end in itself. The main attention was paid to the characterization of the image. The art of Kostroma school is characterized by epic monumentality, grandeur, as in the face of this John. Also a lot of melting, which creates a moderate volume to the face of this saint. There is also a slight baroque aesthetic in the icon.

The size (57 x 75 cm.) of the icon in principle make this image not just an ancient school icon, but also a powerful sacred image.

Voinstvennik (warrior) is not a Warrior. This is an ancient name for a warrior prince.
