Description: The owner of the icon - This is an elderly woman Vera S., who represents one of the last descendants of the Old Believer dynasty, ascending from the descendants of the Russian Old Believers (who fled from power) who came to Estonia from the White Sea coast. They have entrenched in Estonia at the end of the 17th century and founded in southern Estonia several villages on the coast of Lake Peipsi: a kind of Old Believer civilization. Their spiritual leader was Gabriel Frolov himself.
A person gifted in an extreme way. He talentedly wrote chants and music, founded the school of icon painting that is now known throughout the world, composed theological treatises, and wrote books. Their settlement is a few villages where time stands still.
This icon was taken out of the village with a very speaking name - Paradise. They tried to make paradise on earth in their homes. In doing such houses, they needed icons that were given great importance as a "window to heaven" in the words of John Chrysostom. Therefore, their icons are very high quality and expensive, compared to ordinary ones.
So they call themselves - Ancient Orthodox Christians. Beyond the convictions, great attention in the community was paid to arts, singing, literature, and of course icon painting.
Many magnificent icon painters came out of the Frolovsk school. The most famous are the dynasty of Frolov, Myznikov, Solntsev and others.
The icon painting of this icon of the Annunciation is distinguished by this theological accuracy, impeccable adherence to canons, a rich but harmonious balanced palette of colors. No Western influences or deviations from the ancient canons. Byzantine tradition. We can confidently say that this school was guided by the most ancient samples. For example, this plot returns us to the earliest iconography of this plot. Since the Frolovsk school arose on the basis of the “Pomeranian” (White Sea coast) school, from where the first Old Believers came with their icons and was later rethought by the master and having acquired a unique look, nevertheless some of the nuances of icon painting and the color palette have a recognizable Pomeranian origin.
The author of this icon, Gabriel Frolov himself. He was friends with the customer of the icon, the great-grandfather of Vera S. and was the godfather of her grandmother.
Therefore, the particular importance of the icon, that it was painted by the Chief Master himself and the founder of the icon painting school. This icon has serious cultural and historical as well as antique art significance.
