Technique & Material: Solid board, tempera, counter dowels.

Description:  The board is carefully processed with the "scraper" - special planer that existed until the middle of the 18th century. Vertical grooves remain from it - a bright attribution sign.

Probably the most amazing thing here, which immediately rivets to this icon - is the brightest palette of colours with rare expensive pigments-colours. It looks especially impressive on bone gesso.

Iconography: Archangel Michael is depicted on horseback in Armor with weapons in rendition of the angel of the Apocalypse. In Russian national icon painting, this plot known since the 16th century (1555). The devil is completely amazed here. His image is very dramatic in this icon.

"Iconography of the Archangel Michael as the Horseman of the Apocalypse (Ch. 8, 10) with numerous allusions to the texts of the Revelation of John the Theologian appears only in the second half of the 17th century in connection with the church reform, which gave rise in society to a keen sense of the “near end” of the world and experiences of the end times. The appearance of interpretations on the book Apocalypse contributed to the creation of new iconographic plots, including "Archangel Michael - Governor of the Formidable Forces", where "prince of Apocalypse" appears at the moment of his duel with the devil - a decisive eschatological battle against evil. In the Old Believer environment, this plot acquired an incredibly wide distribution, especially in the 18th and in the first half of the 19th century." (the author of the description is I.A. The icon was very dirty. Fragment before clearing, was left on the left field of the icon. When the icon was opened - it literally shone flowers!
