Technique & Material: Cypress board, gesso, gold, embossing and engraving, tempera. The frame with a "cold enamel" ornament is reminiscent of the Moscow or Palekh schools.

Description: The painting of this icon is classical for the late 19th century and typical of a special category of icons: issued as gift icons for retiring members of the royal court. Upon dismissal from service, the royal court traditionally awarded various gifts: orders, silverware, and fine weapons, but icons were specifically bestowed upon those who served closely with the royal family.

Icon has perfect state of preservation.

This icon has the exquisite multi-layered painting of the faces, despite its small size, conveys a vivid emotion. The masterful work of a great master is also evident in the gold leaf applied to the garments. This is a masterpiece of late Russian icon painting.
