"Big Kiot Cross - Crucifixion."

Moscow. 18ер century. Workshop - Transfiguration.
Size: 37 x 19,5 cm
Technique & Material: Copper, casting, silvering.

Description:  Kiot crosses - the crosses of the pretty large size, which were placed in Kiot (usually glazed shelves or small lockers for icons) among the icons in the "red" corner. They were crowned to the home iconostasis, hung on the house doors, crashed into the grave and worship and votive crosses (roadside or placed in holy places). People took them during the trips and journeys to create temporary altars.

Rare nuance - silvering the cross. This shows the special status of the cross. Probably it was a revered shrine in the Old Believer family or commune.

On the back side of the cross - a stylized floral ornament.
