Circa 1800. Old Believer icon painter
Technique & Material: board with an ark, gesso, egg distemper, drying oil.
Description: Old Russian canonic style of 16th century. High class of iconography. The special feature of this artistic interpretation of the subject is in the pose of a praying – he is standing at the Virgin on the knees with hands stretched towards Her image. This icon is a good example of pure canonic iconography, - even the relations of sizes of figures, depicted on the icon, to each other, thus, the figure of the saint is always bigger than the rest of the figures. The term perspective was not known and utilized in Russia before 18th century. In visionary plane we see a repenting sinner and the Holy Virgin with the Infant, - their physical dimensions are incomparable, what reflects their spiritual difference.

Price: EUR 1621.- 1115n.jpg "The Virgin of Bogolyubov"
Circa 1750. Moscow
Technique & Material: board, gesso, egg distemper, drying oil.
Description: Very thin and highly professional painting. Even the smallest details reflect precise work, - geometrically correct architecture of the temple, every face of the praying man is carefully painted and have its own individuality and character.
The Virgin of Bogolyubov is one of the oldest icons of the Holy Virgin, it was created in 1157, by an order of the duke Andrew of Bogolyubov. Iconography of this subject goes back to the Byzantine type “The Defender” (Agiosoritiss), who prayed for the salvation of humankind. The image of Bogolyubov depicts the Holy Virgin in full height, holding a scroll with a text of a prayer in Her hand, and the top part of the icon has the image of Jesus Christ.
Veneration of the icon as miracle-working is related to the Moscow period of Russian history. In the beginning of 15th century the icon was brought to Moscow, most probably for restoration, and since that time it became famous as a miracle icon. In 16-17th century were especially honored the icons of The Virgin of Bogolyubov with the people on their knees, and such interpretation is called “Prayer About the People”. In 18-19th centuries locally popular icons of the icon were in numerous churches, in 1771 during the epidemic of plague the icon was prayed to send rescue from the dreadful disease.

In the corners there are baroque style marks (smaller images) of Evangelists with their symbols, they are: Mathew – the Angel, Mark is the Eagle, John – Lion and Luke the Bull. The images of the 6-wing Seraphs are very interesting (near the throne of Savior). There is a massive use of gold in this icon, - all over the background. This speaks for the high price of the icon and its special character, but also symbolizes Divine light, Power and victorious radiance of Good. Tremendously expressive faces are painted in the traditions of Old-Russian icon art, although having special character and unique style, - just as it should be in a truly creative interpretation. The faces do not have any marks of secular painting, but still are slightly deeper than usual. The proportions are very precise – in a tactful closeness to the reality. The framing of the icon is made in baroque style, with usage of complex painting with blacking and engraved patterns inside. The setting is worth the icon – it is embroidered with beads. Such setting itself is a masterpiece of art and an integral part of the wonderful icon.

Price: EUR 10 000.- 1030n.jpg "The God Almighty"
19th century. Moscow
Size: 27 x 22 x 3cm.
Technique & Material: board, gesso, mixed technique, silver setting, drying oil. From the back side, the icon is covered with velvet shirt.
Description: An outstanding icon. Facial painting has been produced by one of the best icon painter of that time.
The face of the Savior has been painted in naturalistic manner, as it was fashioned during 19th century, and was practiced by such masters as Nesterov, Vasnetsov and Vrubel, who turned to iconography. This is just the case. No need to provide the arguments that it is the work of a great master – painting class speaks for itself. Unfortunately there was a veto on signing the icons.
The setting indirectly confirms the high status of the icon. It is made of 84th alloy of silver, and is composed of several parts: general plane, clothes of the Savior, nimbus and the Gospel. These details are crafted with jeweler precision. The whole setting is massive and heavy. There is a hallmark on the setting of the jeweler S.G. and head of a lady – mark of Moscow jewelers. The setting plays a role of precious decoration of image of Christ. The silver of the setting is partially covered with patina, but upon a wish of a customer it can be easily cleaned: for now, we decided to keep the original state of preservation of the icon and its setting.
One of the most remarkable icons in our gallery.
