Description: The icon of masterly painting with some influence of neo-baroque. In pre-Mongolian Russia, Saint Dmitry Solunski was honored even more than St. George the Warrior. St. Dmitry of Solunsk is an especially honored saint, the patron of all Russian warriors and dukes. He was the head of the city of Solunsk (Thessaloniki), the second major city of Byzantine empire (after Constantinople). St. Dmitry martyred for his faith during the times of persecutions of Chriostians.
With the course of time, Saint Dmitry began to be honored as of the most powerful saints and protector of Thessaloniki and all Byzantium from the barbarians. The memory day of Saint Dmitri of Solunsk is the 26th October.
The icon not only has a rare subject, but also a very special type of representation of the subject, - so called "izvod". Usual iconography depicts St. Dmitry sitting on a horse and hitting the impious barbarian Lii with a spear. Here we see a completely different icon-painting: the saint is depicted with a spear in his hand, robed in gorgeous martial clothes; on the background there is a city fortress.
The top left area represents the icon of the Holy Virgin, the top right, - the Lord with the Crucifixion giving the martyrs crown to the saint. The icon was purchased in 2006 from the descendants of immigrants from Russia (St. Petersburg) after the 1917 revolution.
A unique icon painted by an order. Very good state of preservation
