"Jesus Christ the All-Merciful"
High Resolution Images: fragments.
Russia, Around 1800.
Size: 35 x 28 cm.
Technique & Material: Board with dowels, gesso, tempera, gold, enamel, drying oil.
Description: This is an extra rare iconography of Jesus Christ. The Savior is depicted full-length with arms wide open, with which He seems to be trying to embrace the whole world. The meaning of this pose of Christ lies in the phrase "All that exists in the hands of the Lord."
On the lower margin of the icon there is an inscription: "A copy of the Miraculous icon in the Chapel of the Iberian Mother of God". It is likely that we are talking about the Chapel of Iberian Mother of God, which was on Red Square in Moscow.
After the Revolution, in 1922, all valuables and almost all icons were stolen from this Chapel. In 1929 the Chapel was completely destroyed.
It is possible that this icon is the only copy of the lost miraculous icon.
The highest level of icon painting. The finest personal painting with masterly elaboration of details. An exquisite ornament made with melted gold on the Savior's clothes.
The gold background of the icon is decorated with a rich engraved pattern in the form of crosses and Bethel stars.
The fields of the icon are decorated with a very complex enamel ornament.
The color scheme of the icon is refined and harmonious.
The icon has been cleaned of darkened layers of drying oil and has excellent original state of preservation.
This is the rarest icon of the highest sacred, historical and collection value.
