Description: St. Zosima and Savaty are ones of the most honored Russian saints. Deserted islands on the far edge of Russia attracted Orthodox monks who were seeking solitude and prayerful deed. A monastery founded on the island of Solovky, later became a stronghold of ancient orthodox Christian faith.
In the end of XVII century just that monastery was one of the bastions for the old faith. In 1667 the Solovetsk rise began among cenobites who did not accept the new church rules of patriarch Nikon, and began defending the old faith. …This lead to a siege of the monastery, which lasted 7 years. Some monks who fled from Solovetsky monastery after the defeat of the cloister by voevoda Mescherinov, founded a multitude of hermitages on the territory of Russia.
These great Christian ascetics and zealots are regarded as healer-saints and miracle-workers, and have especially strong veneration in old believer environment. Additionally, this icon was prayed for patronage over bee farming. The icon represents good quality provincial painting, done in ancient-Russian tradition; the icon is in practically ideal state of preservation. The icon was rather expensive for the time, due to the use of natural silver leaf for background surfacing. There are some author’s writings on the back side: “Zosima i Savatiy”, digit ‘30’ and signature of the author.
High Resolution Images: fragments.
