Description: Flor and Lavr - are Christian saint martyrs who lived in the 2nd century. They were renowned stonemasons in the Roman province of Illyricum. The craftsmen were sent to the neighboring region to build the temple of Heracl, but they built a Christian church and because of that they were thrown into a well and buried alive with stones. Later, when their relics were discovered, the death of horses in the area stopped, therefore this saints are considered the patrons of these animals.
The iconography of Flor and Lavr took part in the 15th century. From the middle of the 16th century, when Metropolitan Macarius included the Lives of the Saints in the book "The Great Menaion-Chetiya", the icon became most widespread.
Visually, the image was divided into two parts. In the center of the upper part, the Archangel Michael was depicted with or without two harnessed horses. Flor and Lavr were painting on the hills to either side of Archangel Michael. Despite the fact that in life the brothers were twins, on the icons Flor is painted as a middle-aged man, and Lavr - young men. Horses were painted in the lower part of the icon.
The icon represents the folk style of icon painting.
