Russia, Moscow, Kremlin. End of the 17th century
Size: 29,5 x 26,3 cm.
Technique & Material: Board with the ark, gesso, egg tempera, gold, drying oil. Oklad(frame): silver, enamel.
Description: This icon was painted in the Armory of the Kremlin in the workshop of Simon Ushakov. This icon is the pinnacle of Russian icon painting of the 17th-18th centuries. Such icons were painted exclusively for the Russian elite and the Imperial encirclement.
The painting of this icon is impeccable and speaks for itself. The personal painting is voluminous, made with multilayer glaze, so that the blush only peeks through the layers of painting. The omophor of the Mother of God is decorated with melted gold, and the clothes of the Baby is decorated - with an assiste.
The precious frame of the icon is made in ancient traditions. Ever since Byzantium, especially revered icons have been adorned with precious details. As a rule, it was gratitude for miracles occurring through prayer to the saint image (healing from an illness, victory in a war, etc.).
The rich decoration of this icon suggests that the financial possibilities of the customer were unlimited. The fields of the icon are covered with the silver basma, and the corners and inscriptions are covered with enamel plates. Enamel plates on the corners (cloisone) are so complex that even now they present great difficulty for jewelers. The frame (oklad) was added to the icon in the middle of the 19th century.
The icon and the precious frame (oklad) are now representing a beautiful and harmonious image.
