Description: The oldest monument of the Kostroma icon painting school and the brightest school of Moscow kingdom of the late 16-18 centuries.
Only for the second half of the 17th century in the Armory of the Moscow Kremlin there were about 70 (!) Kostroma icon painters. Kostroma school most determined the style of the Kremlin icon painting itself. In essence, Kostroma icon workers were a kind of workshop of the Armory and many of them worked in the Kremlin for 20 years or more.
This icon is exceptional and is the crystallization of all the skills of this great icon painting school. This icon only could be written by the best artists - Kirill Ulanov and his circle.
The icon was under two layers of later entries. Because of the importance of this monument the cleaning of this icon took more than two years and was done by a "gentle" careful museum way: honey with a scalpel - when restoration tools are just a set of scalpels and saliva as solvent. No chemistry was used at all. Our guys
mastered this method while they were working in the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg This is a laborious method
which allowed us to leave the icon under the "native" drying oil. Priests call these icons - "under the grace".
The most valuable historical monument of high museum significance.
