St Nicholas the Miracle - worker with St George the Victorious and Archangel Michael.

19th century. about 1850 . Central Russia . Tver (?)

Size: 24,3 x 21,3 cm.

Technique & Material: Board, gesso, tempera , drying oil.

Description: Very rare icon. There are three very beloved and revered saints in Russia on this icon: St. Nicholas the Miracle - worker, Archangel Michael and St. George the Victorious.

These three saints are revered as the celestial warriors, that's why they are patrons of Christian warriors. Feature of this icon in that it is very male - military icon, full of sacred power and spiritual power.Archangel Michael is depicted in military armor with a flaming sword, St George the Victorious in clothes of Roman soldier with a spear in his hand. St. Nicholas in a rare recension - on the head of a saint " miter " - headdress higher priesthood. In Russia common people call this type of image St. "Winter" Nicholas the Miracle-worker.

St. Nicholas - the central figure on this icon. It is explained by the special status of the saint in the Russian Christianity. Nicola is revered as a miracle worker, he is the patron saint of sailors , merchants, soldiers and children.
