Description: About north iconography:
Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign is classic art of so-called Northern School. In the silent lake and forest corners of the North, representatives of white and black (monks) clergy, townsmen residents and even peasants were involved in the icon painting. Working alone (artisanal) they often focused on the monuments of Novgorod, but with own stylistic and coloristic characteristics.
On the large parts of the Russian North in the 16-18 centuries, there were many-sided icon painting with their individual shades for each area.
The "Northern painting" is characterized by a number of common features.
Firstly, it is the demotic, some realism, ingenuousness plan and it's implementation. There is no particular subtlety of the senses, but the icon of the North is captivating deep sincerity, naive and pure " heart". In inscriptions we can often see local dialect, in the face of the Mother of God - the impact of the local Россиян Orthodox peasant women's type.
Coloring: It is dominated by muted, somewhat turbid tones, which are perfectly in harmony with the interiors of wooden churches and with soft colors of the northern landscape.
According to the technique: sweeping highlights, large pounded paints of pigments are applied with liquid transparent layer, so that sometimes there are visible grains of dye. The board is rudely treated. In this artless painting everything (as the painter of the XVI century said) - "the Simple", but full of special charm, which is characteristic to the live folk art.
The presence of silver additions is saying about the miraculous qualities of the icon. Later basma - is usually gratitude for the miracle or for the healing, what came after prayers to the image.
