Description: On this icon the most favorite Russian saint is depicted in an unusual recension. We can see a stern , resolute and strict image.
St. Nicholas Mozhaiskii - defender of the shepherd and a warrior.
The iconography of this icon is coming from the legend of his assistance to the inhabitants of the city Mozhdysk, which was surrounded by the Mongol - Tatars in the XIV century.
In answer to a prayer for St. Nicholas, there was a miracle vision in one of the churches: St. Nicholas appeared in the sky , in the form of a formidable standing over the cathedral.
With one hand he raised his gleaming sword , ready to fall on the heads of enemies , with the other hand he was holding Mozhaesk city as saving it. The Sword and the temple, as symbols of "military overcoming " and assistance in military affairs , at the same time was reminding of the hot protection of the Orthodox faith and the teachings of Christ.
Frightened by the menacing sign , the enemy fled in terror from the walls Mozhaysk , and people in the grateful of the remembrance of the powerful defence, had cut out of the tree the miraculous image of the patron saint in that manner , which they saw in the sky.
