Description: Mother of God of Augustov - icon of the Mother of God that is revered in the Russian Church, written in the memory of it appearance in 1914 to Russian soldiers before the Warsaw-Ivangorod war operation (September 15 - October 26, 1914), the battle of Augustov in the Suvalk province of the Russian Empire (now in the territory of Eastern Poland).
According to the stories of the soldiers, on the night of September 7-8 they saw the Mother of God in heaven with the baby Jesus Christ on her one hand, and the other hand pointing to the west. After this appearance, a big battle broke out near Augustovo and was marked by a great victory. Not one of the witnesses of the phenomenon died in this battle. A message about this miracle was published in the church and secular press and aroused enthusiasm among the troops. Since 1915, the first iconographic images of this event were written. The saint Synod considered the issue of the appearance of the Mother of God for about a year and a half, and on March 31, 1916 there was decistion about the icon dedicated to this miracle.
Absolutely perfect state of conservation.
Provenance: Provenance for this icon is a true miracle in itself. This icon is directly from the family of the tsarist officer, the hero of the First World War, order bearer, who after the October revolution did not support the Bolsheviks, having joined the northwestern army of General Yudenich. General Yudenich freed Estonia from the Bolsheviks, so many officers had a personal life in Estonia.
